Your product can be fast, secure and full of great features, and still lose users at the first screen. In our design reviews, the same handful of issues come up again and again. None of them are expensive to fix, but together they can have a big effect on your results.
1. Asking for too much, too soon
Long sign-up forms are one of the biggest reasons people give up. Ask only for what you need to get started, usually an email and a password, or offer sign-in with Google or Apple. You can collect the rest later, once users have seen the value.
2. Unclear calls to action
Buttons that say “Submit” or “Click here” make users stop and think. Use specific, action-focused labels like “Start free trial” or “Get my quote”, and make the main action on each screen visually obvious.
If users have to think about what to do next, many of them won’t do anything.
3. Ignoring mobile users
For many products, most visitors arrive on a phone. Tiny tap targets, text that’s hard to read and pop-ups that cover the screen all push mobile users away. Design for the smallest screen first, then scale up.
4. Slow pages
Every extra second of loading time costs you visitors. Compress images, load only what’s needed for the first screen and show a skeleton or progress state so users know something is happening.
5. Unhelpful error messages
“Something went wrong” tells the user nothing. Good error messages explain what happened and how to fix it, appear next to the field that caused the problem, and never erase what the user has already typed.
How to find these problems in your product
- Watch real users: five short usability tests will reveal most major issues.
- Check your analytics: look for the steps where the most people drop off.
- Test on real devices: try your product on an older phone with a slow connection.
